Turning Up the Heat: Summer Months Equal More Claims

7.5.2018

Did you know that June, July and August are the peak months for claim activity?  According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII), more workplace injuries occur during the summer months than at other times of the year.  There are many contributing factors to this increase in claim activity, from higher temperatures and heat-related illness, to more demand for products and an increase in road traffic.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)'s Analysis of Highway Crash Fatality study's findings also support the Fund's increase in claim activity for the summer months.  The study, which includes data from 1975-2002, showed that monthly fatalities increase steadily throughout the year, peaking in July and August and declining after the summer months.  Interestingly, the 2 most deadly days of the year fall on July 3rd and July 4th.

June 2018 has already been a record month for claim activity and it is our focus at the ATA Comp Fund to not follow the national trend in July and August.  Our mission is to keep our Membership trained and informed on all aspects of Safety.  Whether it is web-based videos and courses, customized on-site training, or posts regarding how to spot Heat-Related Illness, our Risk Management Team continuously searches for up-to-date material to keep you "in the know" and get your workers home safely to their families.
